Assuming stepping into the classroom environment then you observe numerous faces but also notice their real enthusiasm for learning. The students at this moment show passionate engagement because they deeply understand their assignments. The students also understand information by participating in discussions while asking questions and showing their genuine passion for education.

This could be a picture of your desired classroom environment. As a teacher dedicated to shaping the future of your students, understanding the special difficulties that confront you forms an essential part of our philosophy. Your primary goal exists between teaching students and holding their attention, yet you have scarce resources in crowded classrooms to work with.

As a teacher, you would agree that your primary goal is to empower your students to achieve their best. This brings us to the present discussion on digital learning tools for Nigerian teachers. We plan to present you with essential digital tools that will help you create an interactive teaching and learning profession that you truly desire.

Interactive learning made possible by suitable digital resources can reveal the full potential that exists within each student. These should activate student interest followed by critical thinking development as you establish classrooms designed for exceptional student achievement. Every teacher has immediate access to numerous free and freemium digital resources which enable educational transformation through learning activities. Modern educational tools help teachers connect traditional learning approaches with the dynamic student experiences which students prioritize in modern education. We will explore together the very best tools that will significantly improve your teaching environment from this day forward.

At this point let’s define what we mean by the term ‘free’. Free as a term means   a combination of trial periods, basic plan access and freemium versions of the digital tools. The list will clearly indicate between entirely free access features and trial periods and freemium options for you to choose the optimal solution based on your requirements. Here we suggest useful practical tools rather than creating unattainable promises. Let’s get started.

Understanding the Digital Shift in Nigerian Classrooms

Have you heard of the term ‘digital shift in education’? The concept appears sophisticated since it could have originated in a technical industry conference. But what does it really mean? For us in Nigeria, it’s not about the use of computers and electronic gadgets, but how we modify the process of teaching and learning in our classrooms and beyond. It’s how we can promote teaching and learning to benefit teachers and learners alike.

Think about it. In previous times educational sessions mainly focused on classroom writing and textbook reading. But today, children use mobile phones for tasks beyond entertainment apps and social media interactions. These technological tools enable students to perform internet research for topics then team up for projects on Google Docs and produce presentations through Canva or Google Slides. It’s a whole different ballgame.

It’s not just about students, teachers are changing too. They’re learning and using platforms like Google Classroom to share assignments and give feedback. They can easily visit YouTube to learn new skills and even use Kahoot to create interactive quizzes to make lessons engaging.

However, it’s not as easy as we’ve described it. There are lots of challenges, especially for Nigerian education, including:

  1. Internet connectivity: Internet connectivity is a major challenge in the Nigerian education sector, especially in the rural areas. The poor access to the internet makes it difficult to connect online and see videos or even run an online quiz.
  2. Lack of infrastructure: Many schools lack the equipment and facilities needed to successfully adopt digital learning tools in our classrooms. Similarly, the students may lack the required capital to purchase the gadgets needed to use these fascinating tools.
  3. The digital divide: Also, many teachers and students are not eager to adopt technology. The knowledge gap and willingness to learn is wide, especially in the rural areas.

Nigerian Teachers are Gradually Shifting Grounds

But despite the above challenges, we are seeing notable changes and the adoption of digital tools among Nigerian teachers. For example:

  1. The teacher from a countryside area provides students without regular internet access with short voice notes and video lessons through WhatsApp. They develop basic solutions to connect students despite operating with minimal resources.
  2. Students in a Lagos school practice science through digital simulations on computers. The students witness practical demonstrations instead of relying on classroom text content.
  3. By showing his students online maps and virtual history tours the history teacher in Onitsha makes history more engaging for them. The students can explore historical attractions from their classroom environment.

The digital transformation takes place today throughout Nigerian classrooms. The changes and learning transformations still need improvement but they keep evolving.

So, what does it all mean? Our students require instructors who can easily adjust to new methods and tools. Teachers and students should embrace new ways of learning during both online and physical classes. We must stand by each other in teaching while swapping knowledge and creating answers.

The essential part of transitioning to digital learning surpasses simple technological changes. By using digital learning tools, we help our students build knowledge for tomorrow and create opportunities for their success.

Interactive Digital Learning Tools for Nigerian Teachers

So far, our discussion has covered both the reasons behind this digital transformation along with its key components. We will proceed with explanatory details about how to accomplish this digital transformation. We need to understand proper implementation methods for these tools to build better and interactive educational platforms.

We know that your work responsibilities and commitments compel you to prioritize efficiency over technological complications. As a result, we have assembled a set of basic yet powerful tools that anyone can implement and learn quickly. Each of these digital tools acts as your virtual instructional resource set, providing you with tools for lesson enhancement and professional efficiency.

The tools are not mere devices or applications offered solely for entertainment value. These tools can:

  1. Transform passive learning into active participation using tools that boost student motivation for contributions and exploration.
  2. Enable students to team up with fellow learners through collaborative functions that function while students stay apart in physical locations.
  3. Allow you to meet student needs by supporting individual learning needs and accommodating multiple learning preferences.
  4. Enhance simplified classroom administration, help teachers handle arrangement systems and provide student progress monitoring and improve parent-student-school contact.
  5. Essentially, making teaching and learning interesting. Learning is more effective when it brings pleasure to students.

This article explores interactive presentation software and gamified learning applications for Nigerian classrooms and explains their implementation for teachers.

We will identify the available features for each platform while specifying between cost-free options, trial versions, and freemium offerings. We are now heading into the building phase of our digital toolkit for Nigerian teachers.

Interactive Presentation Platforms

Students benefit from interactive presentation tools that comprise Google Slides with Extensions, ClassPoint and Mentimeter to improve their learning experience.

Google slides

The extensions built into Google Slides enable teachers to run live polls, quizzes, and drawings in order to facilitate interactive learning elements.

Interactive digital learning tools - Best free to boost student engagement

ClassPoint

Using ClassPoint, teachers can convert PowerPoint into an instructional application that enables students to work on slides through drawing and generate instant quizzes beyond basic teacher-student communication channels.

The tool functions well in crowded classrooms where students find it difficult to participate. The free version of ClassPoint offers essential tools to its users, who can access additional advanced features by upgrading to the premium tier.

Mentimeter

The features of Mentimeter enable teachers to conduct live polls as well as generate word clouds while providing Q&A sessions, which create enhanced engagement in lessons.

The free version allows for up to 50 participants per month. Additional features require a premium subscription.

These products provide interactive educational tools that enhance active classroom sessions and participation. They therefore remove traditional one-directional presentations and make lessons more impactful and meaningful for students.

Collaborative Whiteboards Tools

Collaborative whiteboard platforms are other tools that can be used to enhance classroom interaction. They include Google’s Jamboard (now deprecated), Figma, Lucid and Miro. With these tools teachers and students can extend learning outside the classroom.

Consider cases where as a teacher, you would prefer a group work done on a sheet of paper to represent what is learned. Same energy is what whiteboards bring to the table, especially, when resources are limited.

Lucid

In case you have heard of or used Jamboard before, Lucid is a great alternative designed to allow collaboration among students in real-time. Lucid platform is quite simple and intuitive for teachers and students to share ideas, problems, and represent them visually.

It is particularly useful for brainstorming sessions, where ideas can be easily grouped and discussed.

You can try Lucid for free or subscribe to the premium version to add more functionalities.

Miro

Miro is another whiteboard app designed for collaboration on any device and location. It is a robust and feature-rich app that allows students to perform different visual activities, such as:

  • mind mapping,
  • flow charting,
  • project and product design.

It provides an interactive workspace for both students and businesses, and is particularly useful for project and activity-based learning. Students can work on different sections of their class project on the same board by adding text, images, links, and videos.

Miro has a free version that allows for 3 editable boards. All it’s premium versions offer trial periods.

These tools and more helps teachers and students to break down barriers of physical space and limited resources. They also allow them to work together by sharing ideas, and engaging with learning material in a more dynamic way.

Gamified Learning Platforms

Learning sometimes is a herculean task for students. It is usually easier if we can use what they natural love as a means of teaching them. Because students naturally love games, we can use gamified platforms like Quizizz and Kahoot to grab their attention.

Gamified platforms come to our teaching aid by helping us turn learning into a fun challenge. They present questions as interactive games, adding music, points, and a leaderboard.

With these apps we can create quickly formative assessments and provide immediate feedbacks on students’ understanding and how they’re motivated.

Kahoot and Quizizz

Kahoot is a gamified platform that offers free and premium plans. The free plan has only basic features.

On the other hand, Quizizz offers unique features such as allowing students, teachers and administrators to create an account. Also, students are allowed to see questions on their own devices, offering more variety in question types, and providing detailed feedback after each question.

As a teacher with the basic plan, you can create up to 20 lessons and quizzes and collaborate with your students. With Quizizz you can create assessments, lessons and interactive videos.

Kahoot and Quizizz makes learning easy and interactive allowing for asynchronous learning and assignment submissions. Students can answer questions on their own pace using any of the apps.

Both platforms operate on a freemium model, with the free version offering basic content creation and hosting options. Also, both platforms:

  • are easy to use,
  • provide AI tools for easy quiz and lessons creating
  • have a vast library of pre-made quizzes, and
  • provide instant feedback and data that can help teachers model teaching.

Video Creation and Editing Tools

In recent times video content has been increasingly useful in teaching and learning. It helps to make abstract topics easier to understand and can also be used to deliver varying kinds of topics.

Teachers can use video to teach and engage students by simplifying advance concepts and make them easier to understand. Similarly, students can as well be encouraged to create videos as a way of demonstrating their understanding of key concepts.

There are easy-to-use and cost-effective tools to create such videos including Canva and Clipchamp.

Canva

Canva Video is a user-friendly tool with a drag-and-drop interface that allows for creating short lesson summaries with text overlays, images, and music.

It offers templates and a library of stock footage and music, making the process easier and more creative.

Canva offers a generous free plan with advanced tools and a larger library of assets, making it a great starting point for both teachers and students. It also offer a 30-day trial period for its premium plan.

Clipchamp

Clipchamp is a web-based tool suitable for beginners to auto video contents with ease. It has a straightforward interface for trimming video clips, adding text and overlays, music, and transitions.

It also allows you to record your computer screen as well as use webcam during recording.

Clipchamp offers free and paid subscriptions with the paid subscription offering more features with 4K(UHD) resolution for export. The free subscription offer less features, less resolution export (1080 HD) and a possible watermark.

Learning Management Systems (LMS)

Learning Management Systems (LMS) platforms can help teachers to effectively manage teaching and learning and classrooms in general.

In the Nigerian education, it can assist in creating a central digital hub for managing classroom resources such as students’ assignments, and communication.

Google Classroom and Schoology

Two popular LMS Nigerian teachers can easily adopt are Google Classroom, and Schoology.

interactive learning tools - google classroom

Google Classroom is a popular option for teachers, offering a seamless integration with Google Workspace, allowing for easy posting of assignments, sharing of learning materials, and collection of student work.

Communication features include posting announcements, sending private messages, and creating discussion forums.

On the other hand, Schoology Basic is another popular LMS that offers a free ‘Basic’ plan. With the basic plan, you can organize course content, creates assignments, quizzes, facilitate discussions, and tracks student grades.

These LMS platforms can help teachers streamline workflow and create a more organized learning environment for students.

The beauty is that in the presence of intermittent internet access, students can access the platforms at their pace.

Teachers can therefore effectively manage resources, communication, and teaching and learning.

Conclusion

So, here we are. This article has examined remarkable digital learning tools which offer free or freemium services that might reshape your interactive teaching approaches.

The benefits of these tools have been seen and acknowledged by many Nigerian teachers who have used one or more of these tools. It is therefore your choice to decide to or not use any of the tools.

We suggest that you consider implementing the single educational platform from your educational exploration for today. The challenge requires you to select one digital tool starting with Kahoot! quizzes or free Google Classroom features to create assignments.

Take the challenge by dedicating 15 to 20 minutes to test one of the tools mentioned above this week. We have provided links for each tool discussed.  Experiment with a simple activity.

The future of learning becomes vivid when students show more active participation. More collaborative learning in a more organized classroom. Your capacity to reveal these beneficial opportunities exists at this present moment.

Join the movement! Please share your findings by writing in the section marked comments. In your comment list your selected tools with details about your intended goals.

Our goal should be to establish a community of Nigerian teachers who promote digital learning as a unified force. Take action to transform your classroom because theoretical enhancements and transformations yield no results. Your students are waiting. Click, explore, and empower!
